Orca interaction reported off Portuguese coast, resulting in extensive damage

A yacht under 10m experienced an orca interaction at 38.666 N, 9.411 W on 15 September 2025, resulting in extensive damage to the rudder. The vessel was sailing close to shore when three distinct blows to the rudder were felt, leading to a loss of steering. The crew turned off the depth sounder, after which the blows stopped, and proceeded to the nearest port under engine power.

A yacht reported an orca interaction on 23 August 2025 at 42.517 N, 8.950 W, off the Galician coast. The vessel, motorsailing under 10m, sustained moderate damage requiring immediate repairs, including a leak and stiff tiller. The interaction lasted 10 to 30 minutes.

Four vessels, MT HONOUR 25, MV SWARD, MT EUREKA, and MT ASANA, were hijacked between 21 April and 17 July 2026. The incidents occurred off the northern coast of Somalia and Yemen. All four vessels are currently anchored close to the northern coast of Somalia, within territorial waters, with 67 crew members held captive.
